Q: What does it mean to have software that is available over the Internet?
There are many names for software that resides on the Internet, or is 'Web-based'.
Web 2.0 compatible software, web applications, Internet applications and Rich Internet Applications
are just a few of the more popular monickers given to this new breed of software.
What this means is that your software is available anywhere that there is an Internet connection
available. Yahoo! or Google would be proper analogies in that they are Web based. They are Websites,
but also include extensive Web-based software like Google Maps and My Yahoo!.
There is much more included in these companies' web application repertoire, but in the interest of keeping it short here
are some links for further information on Web software:
Web 2.0: Web Applications vs. Desktop Applications
What is a Rich Internet Application?
Q: How is that different than programs like Microsoft Word?
Microsoft Word is
a desktop application. Desktop applications have to be installed on your computer
and maintained by you or your technical staff. Upgrades must be purchased and installed
onto the desktop computer. If you want to use this type of program, you must have access
to the computer onto which the program was installed.
Q: So, I don't have to install Web-based software?
No. Internet applications reside on the company's server that provides the service.
In most cases a subscription is purchased that allows you to access that application.
Some, however, are available for free with the option to purchase more functionality.
In either case, the software is available over a private connection only you can get
access to. All upgrades, maintenance and backups are done by the service provider.
Q: Is RanchForeman Equine Software a Web-based application?
Yes. RanchForeman Equine Software is a Rich Internet Application that is available via any Internet
connection anywhere (any time) in the world. Our pricing
is based upon the volume of horses managed with the software and is obtained by purchasing
a subscription.
All upgrades are free, maintenance is done by RanchForeman Support and backups are executed everyday.
Do you back up your software and data everyday? We didn't think so. ;)
Q: What kind of Internet connection does my RanchForeman Equine Software require?
RanchForeman Equine Software will work over any connection, though we highly recommend a high
speed Internet connection. Dial-up accelerators are acceptable, but performance enhancements are
noticeable when you move from a dial-up to some other type of high-speed access.
Q: Our residence/equine operation does not have DSL or Cable available to it as we are
located in a rural area. Contact RanchForeman Support or call
210.222.8200 so we can help you find a suitable connection in your area. Rural is what we do. We can research
the area to find a Wireless DSL provider, or help you get set up with one of the following new services.
Cingular EDGE Network
Verizon Wireless Broadband Access
Sprint Broadband Connect
HughesNet (Direcway) Satellite Internet
The first three services are available wherever the phone service is available. The satellite service is available anywhere you have a view of the southern sky. |
